Step into the voice, spirit, and rising power of a young Paul Robeson.

Written and directed by Marshall Jones III, this stirring theatrical production features acclaimed Broadway vocalist Nathaniel Stampley, Jr., stage and screen actor Stephen Conrad Moore, and musical director and pianist Carl Laventure. Through music and reflection, an elder Paul Robeson looks back on his younger self—a defining period when his extraordinary gifts first took shape.

Rooted in history and alive with sound, Young Paul Robeson Sings is more than a performance—it is a living tribute to the formative years that helped shape one of the most powerful voices of the 20th century..

The Paul Robeson Arts Festival was made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Council on the Arts..

Join us on April 18 as we continue to celebrate one of Somerville's greatest sons, Paul Robeson, Somerville High School Class of 1915. All are welcome!!!

“The whole performance was very meaningful and educational for me. Some of the older audience members asked how they, or the performers, or society in general, may keep the legacy of Black history and its cultural significance alive for the younger generations to recognize and respect. As a 25 year old audience member, I felt like the answer lay in the moment itself. The history was actively being passed on to me, in a way I could really appreciate because I love music and the arts. I am now better equipped to share about Mr. Robeson’s life, impact, and how Somerville played a historic role in shaping our modern social landscape, with my friends and family who may be unaware. It was really beautiful to see that passage of the story meant so much to the older audience members, and their desire for that passage was both being expressed and fulfilled at the same time.”
